Cal Poly Counseling Services

Cal Poly Counseling Services is an on-campus service available to enrolled students; they also offer educational workshops, individual or group therapy, crisis intervention, mental health trainings, and consultations. These services are free and confidential, provided by mental health professionals. If you are in need of immediate crisis counseling, you will be seen immediately in-office during normal business hours; after business hours, call the crisis hotline to speak with a live mental health professional. If you would like to schedule an appointment for counseling services, call during normal business hours (often, these scheduled appointments will be referral meetings to other campus/community partners that would best suit your needs).

Cal Poly Office of Student Ombuds Services 

The Cal Poly Office of Student Ombuds Services is a more generalized resource for students. The Ombuds office is a confidential, informal resource for students in regards to a multitude of on-campus issues; they can refer you to another service, explain Cal Poly procedures, and answer any questions you may have about the university at large. In regards to sexual misconduct specifically, they are mandated reporters, and therefore any disclosures within the office will be reported to Title IX.

Title IX

The Title IX Coordinator/Office of Equal Opportunity, Brian Gnandt, has been designated to oversee and coordinate implementation of Title IX and campus compliance of sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking. Students or staff/faculty wishing to file a complaint of sexual harassment or other forms of gender violence can contact the Office of Equal Opportunity for further information or to make a report.

LOCAL SERVICES: 

RISE

RISE is a nonprofit organization in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles that serves survivors of sexual violence and intimate partner violence, as well as their loved ones. RISE provides free or low-cost confidential counseling, crisis services, emergency safe housing, and help with restraining orders and other legal resources. All services provided by RISE are available in English and Spanish. While most services are confidential, staff members at RISE are mandated reporters, and thus obligated by law to report under certain circumstances, including abuse or neglect to minors, elders, or dependent adults, as well as if the client is in danger of harming themselves or others.

Stand Strong

Stand Strong serves survivors of intimate partner violence and child abuse, with a vision of stopping the cycle of violence completely, by providing the following services: a free 24-hour crisis hotline, crisis counseling and intervention, individual and group counseling, emergency shelter and transitional housing, legal services and advocacy, prevention, and education. These services are not restricted to women only; all survivors and loved ones are welcome, men included. All services are available in English and Spanish, with an additional Latina Services Program.

SLO Hotline

SLO Hotline, through Transitions-Mental Health Association, is a free confidential crisis counseling hotline, providing mental health support, crisis prevention, and suicide prevention through the phone. Their services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These services are not specific to sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or stalking, but are more generally provided for mental health crises; however, all issues are welcomed to be counseled through this program. They also offer services to loved ones and survivors, as well as counseling in Spanish.

The parent organization to SLO Hotline, Transitions-Mental Health Association, is a non-profit organization dedicated to mental health advocacy; eliminating stigma, providing counseling services, and promoting health, wellness, and progress.

RAINN

RAINN, or Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, is a nationwide anti-sexual violence organization that provides free education, advocacy, and counseling around the issues of sexual violence. While there is not a local chapter in San Luis Obispo, they do offer a national crisis hotline, available 24/7, as well as online chat options.
