Cal Poly Counseling Services

Cal Poly Counseling Services is an on-campus service available to enrolled students; they also offer educational workshops, individual or group therapy, crisis intervention, mental health trainings, and consultations. These services are free and confidential, provided by mental health professionals. If you are in need of immediate crisis counseling, you will be seen immediately in-office during normal business hours; after business hours, call the crisis hotline to speak with a live mental health professional. If you would like to schedule an appointment for counseling services, call during normal business hours (often, these scheduled appointments will be referral meetings to other campus/community partners that would best suit your needs).

Cal Poly Office of Student Ombuds Services 

The Office of Student Ombuds Services is a campus resource for all Cal Poly students. The Ombuds staff are committed to hearing about students’ experiences. The office offers a safe place to go for assistance in resolving any university-related issue, concern, conflict, or complaint. All communications with the office are strictly private, informal, impartial, and independent. (The only exception is when there appears to be imminent risk of serious harm to self or others or issues about sexual misconduct.)

Title IX

The Civil Rights & Compliance Office has been designated to oversee and coordinate the implementation of Title IX and campus compliance of sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking. Students or staff/faculty wishing to file a complaint of sexual harassment or other forms of gender violence can contact the Civil Rights & Compliance Office for further information or to make a report.

Lumina Alliance (Formerly RISE & Stand Strong)

Lumina Alliance is a nonprofit organization in San Luis Obispo County that is dedicated to ending sexual assault and intimate partner violence. They provide confidential counseling and therapy, crisis services, case management, emergency safe housing, transitional housing, legal resources, and prevention education.

SLO Hotline

SLO Hotline, through Transitions-Mental Health Association, is a free confidential crisis counseling hotline, providing mental health support, crisis prevention, and suicide prevention through the phone. Their services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These services are not specific to sexual assault, intimate partner violence, or stalking, but are more generally provided for mental health crises; however, all issues are welcomed to be counseled through this program. They also offer services to loved ones and survivors, as well as counseling in Spanish.

The parent organization to SLO Hotline, Transitions-Mental Health Association, is a non-profit organization dedicated to mental health advocacy; eliminating stigma, providing counseling services, and promoting health, wellness, and progress.

Lumina Alliance partners with the San Luis Obispo Legal Assistance Foundation (SLOLAF) to provide quality legal services at no charge to survivors of sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and stalking. To learn more about SLOLAF and their services, visit their website at SLOLAF.org. SLOLAF provides a variety of legal services for survivors, including, but not limited to: 

  • Legal consultation to help survivors decide what legal action, if any, they would like to take;
  • Legal representation in restraining order cases, including document preparation, filing, and representation in court

RAINN

RAINN, or Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, is a nationwide anti-sexual violence organization that provides free education, advocacy, and counseling around the issues of sexual violence. While there is not a local chapter in San Luis Obispo, they do offer a national crisis hotline, available 24/7, as well as online chat options.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is another nationwide organization that provides free confidential 24/7 crisis counseling and advocacy. They offer crisis counseling to anyone experiencing domestic violence or intimate partner violence, offer resources and information, and general guidance.
