Understanding the Risks

Several risk factors are at play that can decrease overall safety while traveling abroad. Although monitoring engagement with these risks does not completely prevent a dangerous encounter, it does allow students to have more control over their experience and be more prepared for any dangerous circumstances that may arise.

Risk Factors include
  • Consumption of alcohol or other psychoactive substances
  • Language and Cultural barriers
  • Isolation from a support network
  • Increased stress and anxiety common to travelers
  • Pre-existing mental health conditions and coping mechanisms
  • Presence in unfamiliar territory

Set up a Safer Travels Plan to mitigate risks.
